My name is Linus Chan, and I graduated from Chicago Christian High School in 2013. It was a really formative period of my life, and I’m glad to have made some lifelong friendships and grew a little more into myself during that time. My fondest memories center around the many plays and musicals I got to act in under the guidance of Mrs. Lenters, Mrs. Riley, and Mr. Kowallis. I’m certain that my desire to work on creative projects with other like-minded folks was nurtured because of those productions, and I still carry that spirit with me today. I also quite enjoyed AP U.S. History with Mr. Altena, who ingrained in me an appreciation for history (and some very good tunes). Finally, I remember having a great time in Mrs. Medema’s classes and being encouraged to try many different kinds of art.

I grew up in the southwest side of Chicago and attended both Southwest Chicago Christian School in Oak Lawn, Illinois, and later, Chicago Christian High School in Palos Heights, Illinois.  It may seem strange that I mention these details but I have lived outside of the United States of America for more than a decade as a teacher, first of English and then of all subjects, mainly at the kindergarten level. Throughout this massive journey, I have held two truths to be true: God and the Holy Trinity are watching over me, and that Grandma Doot, my beloved personal savior on Earth, has helped me become who I am today.

At this point in life, approaching 40 years since graduation, high school feels like it was “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away”! A few memories that stand out for me from that time include working on the yearbook Senior year with Mrs. Wilson and too many classmates to count, being the only girl in Mr. Kroon's Chemistry 2 class, singing in the choir, and any English class with Mr. Gary Meyer. The one weekend of Senior year that was both memorable and decisive for my future was the 1981 IHSA Girls’ basketball state championship.

“Leadership is not a rank. It is a responsibility. Leadership is not about being in charge, it is about taking care of those in your charge. When we take care of our people, our people will take care of us.” – Simon Sinek. This quote stuck out to me when I was sitting in Mr. Payne’s Leadership class back as a sophomore at CCHS. Having just started a “side hustle” lawn mowing and painting company that same year, I vowed to incorporate this view of leadership into my newly founded business life and my personal life.

My high school years were a very fun time for me. There are a lot of good memories that I have at CCHS. My fondest memory was my time on the cheer team. It was always fun to cheer the football and basketball teams to victory and go to cheer competitions. My favorite classes at CCHS were English, economics, and Spanish. My English class with Ms. Ozinga would always begin with journal writing. That helped me to expand my vocabulary to illustrate my thoughts. Journaling is still a part of my self-care routine even today.  Another one of my favorite classes was my economics class with Mr. Kreykes. He made the study of business exciting, which inspired my college studies. Lastly, I took Spanish classes all four years with Mrs. Veldboom. Learning about a new language was fun for me. My favorite memory is when we took a field trip to a local Mexican restaurant and had to only speak and order in Spanish. That was a fun time that included good food.

High school was, for me, an overall good experience. I am thankful to the Lord for that, especially with how students and teachers were very welcoming. A lot of my time was spent in the art room with Mrs. Medema. Ceramics class, especially, was an enormous amount of fun being able to create real 3D physical characters and objects. Theater has always been a part of my family, so it was extremely fun to partake and be in the “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Beauty and the Beast” productions as well. It was also fun to be the one to draw and design the cover for our graduating class’s yearbook in 2010. Looking back, I can see how the Lord was preparing me in high school for even more social and experiential growth in college.
